Pilots Wanted!

Aircraft carriers are one of the most majestic modern marvels of engineering.  They are the centerpiece of the forces needed for a military to be truly effective.  These machines are longer than 3 consecutive football fields and can hold about 60 aircraft.  When an aircraft sets sail it has a specific mission.  The aircraft, the supporting equipment and the personnel must work together as a team to accomplish the mission and fulfill the orders of the Commander and Chief.  So what does an aircraft carrier and planes have to do with you?


Capitol City Seventh-day Adventist School is the aircraft carrier with the express mission of "kindling the flame to light the beacons of tomorrow". The mission is from our Commander and Chief, Jesus Christ.  It's cargo (the scholars) is cared for by its attentive crew (the faculty & staff).  The aircraft carrier's planes are the events and programs conducted for the benefit of the school and community.  These aircraft are piloted by the Teachers and PTO members and are powered by hard work and harder prayer.

Recently, parents and teachers met to discuss school fundraising options.  Some of the options discussed included another catalog fundraiser, box tops for education, family night with the Pacers, santa's gift shop, b-ball tournament, grant writing, read-a-thon, spelling bee, penny drive and jump rope.  Our school has a lot of potential planes on its flight deck, but not enough pilots and supporting crew to help prep the planes and help them take off and land.  

What the school and the PTO needs is for you to volunteer to be a pilot, crew member and/or supporter of these planes.  Not only are these planes going to be able to take off without you, our school will not take off and reach its full potential either without your support.  Please contact Wayne Burrell ( / 317-348-4354) to learn more about these opportunities to faithfully support education.  Help us fly a plane. 

The Cake Project

As we were adding puzzle pieces to our count to 100 puzzle, Malina suggested that the picture may be a cake. Kaled then asked if we could bake a cake. We made a list of the items we needed, and Mrs. Bartley brought the ingredients in the next day. We also added the word cake to the word wall. We then found out the oven didn’t work! Oh no! We thought of people who could fix the oven (Mr. Pizzaro, Cameron’s Popaw, and what may be wrong with the oven) and decided we would wait until the repairman came. Finally the oven was fixed on Wednesday! We checked our list to make sure we had all the ingredients. (Mrs. Bartley forgot the cookies) We then took turns adding the ingredients and mixing the batter. We discussed how it smelled (yummy like cake, but the vinegar was yucky and the batter was gooey) We put it in the oven and set the timer for 28 minutes. We waited until after lunch to add the chocolate icing and then we each enjoyed a piece of cake! We then shared our cake with the office and other teachers. We wrote in our journals, using the word cake and if we liked the cake or not. We also read Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells. We noticed the character Max wrote a list just like we did! We also compared the ingredients Max and Ruby used in their cake to the ingredients we used in our cake. Next we would like to bake a chocolate cake!

While involved in the Cake Project students used the following learning concepts:

-we understood the words and pictures on our list and the words and pictures on the recipe

K.RF.1 Reading Literature for a purpose

-we read our list, Bunny Cakes and the recipe together for the purpose of knowing what we needed, how to bake the cake and comparing it to Max and Ruby’s ingredients.

K.RL.2.1 Ask and Answer questions about main text

-we discussed the events in Bunny Cakes 

K.RL.2.4 Elements of text

-We discussed the characters and events of Bunny Cakes

K.M.1. Measurement

-we measured out our ingredients comparing what we used the most and least of

K.1.1 Physical Science

-we observed all our ingredients by sight and smell, and discussed how they changed when they were added together
